Freestyle skiing is a sport that is contested at the Winter Olympic Games. The first Winter Olympics, held in 1924, included nordic skiing. Alpine skiing was added in 1936, but the first official freestyle skiing events were not held until the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France.[1] Before 1992, freestyle skiing events were held at the 1988 Winter Olympics as a demonstration sport. At those games, events for both men and women were held in three disciplines: moguls, aerials and ski ballet; the results of those events are not considered official and are not included here. The first medal event, held at the 1992 Winter Olympics, was the moguls; events in aerials and ski ballet were held but were still considered demonstration sports.[2] For the 1994 Winter Olympics, aerials was added to the program while ski ballet was not. Both events have been contested at every Olympic Games since.[3] Skicross was approved at an International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board meeting in November 2006 and the first events was be held at the 2010 Winter Olympics.[4]
Norwegian Kari Traa has won three medals (one gold, one silver, one bronze), more than any other freestyle skier at the Olympics.[5] No freestyle skier has won more than one gold medal or successfully defended their Olympic title.[6] The youngest athlete to win a medal in freestyle skiing is Yelizaveta Kozhevnikova, who was 18; Tatjana Mittermayer is the oldest, at 33.[7]
Through the 2010 Winter Olympics, American freestyle skiers have won a combined 14 medals, including 5 golds, more than any other nation. France, Norway and the United States are the only nations to have athletes win a medal at every Olympics in which freestyle skiing has been held. 72 medals (24 of each color) have been awarded and have been won by freestyle skiers from 17 National Olympic Committees (NOC).
